    Joel Zito

    Select Specialty Hospital-Macomb, Michigan

Nineteen-year-old Joel Zito was attending Oakland University with a focus in pre-med. On March 27, 2010, he was helping some friends move a large soccer net when it fell and struck his head. Joel was rushed to the local medical center with skull fractures and a devastating closed-head injury. He survived multiple life-saving surgeries on his brain and skull and was placed on a ventilator. His body was also challenged with the diagnosis of diabetes insipidus, hypothyroidism and adrenal insufficiency. A little over a month later, Joel transferred to Select Specialty Hospital-Macomb. With Joel's family by his side, the team at Select Specialty Hospital set out to help him with the next steps in his recovery. Even his high school buddies were on board to help and showed up in Joel's room on prom night in tuxedos and evening dresses. During his time at Select, he weaned from the ventilator and began to follow simple commands. Eventually, after lots of hard work, Joel took steps on his own. By the end of June, he was accepted to rehabilitation. Before leaving Select Specialty, he gave the team a proud thumbs up.
