    Gary Liddy

    Select Specialty Hospital, Akron, OH

While playing with his grandchildren, Gary Liddy felt a tingling sensation in his fingers. By the next day, the tingling spread. He drove to the hospital, but was unable to get out of the car by himself. Within 24 hours, the 59-year-old was on a ventilator and unconscious. His diagnosis was Guillain-Barre Syndrome, respiratory failure and paralysis.

When he arrived at our hospital in April 2015, Gary was on a ventilator, had a tracheotomy and could only move two fingers on his right hand. These obstacles did not get in the way of Gary’s recovery. Gary received a Passy-Muir valve and, with his father at his side, made a phone call to his elderly mother – who cried when she heard his voice.

Though he remembers coming to us unable to speak, Gary says he felt safe and cared for from the minute he came through the doors. He credits the entire team for “wonderful care and never making me feel alone.”
