Steven C. Cramer, MD, MMSc, FAAN, FAHA, FASNR is the Medical Director of Research at California Rehabilitation Institute and a Professor of Neurology at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Cramer is one of two principal investigators, along with Jeffrey G. Ojemann, MD, Vice Chairman for Discovery and a Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington, on a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded research study to improve recovery from stroke.
This study of patients with chronic stroke uses electric brain stimulation to encourage the affected and unaffected regions of the brain to work together to promote improved brain function and thus better arm/hand movement. Patients who have experienced a stroke often experience mobility loss in their affected limbs, which may interfere with their daily activities. While physical therapy can help improve movement following stroke, this study hopes to evaluate if the addition of brain stimulation alongside physical therapy can help patients return to their previous function.
