Samuel “Buddy” Hammerman, MD, MMM, CPE, FCCP is executive vice president and chief medical officer for Select Medical, the largest inpatient provider of post ICU care in the U.S.
Over the past decade, Dr. Hammerman has led multiple initiatives across the company’s 105 hospitals. In those efforts, he partnered with clinical and quality teams to reduce hospital-acquired conditions ranging from pressure injuries, to clostridium difficile, catheter associated urinary tract infections and central line-associated blood stream infections.
Dr. Hammerman has also developed and implemented innovative clinical and rehabilitative pathways to support functional recovery of patients suffering from medical and traumatic injuries. In addition, he and his team published a CHEST article on long-term acute care hospitals extending ICU capacities for COVID-19 response and recovery (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.chest.2020.12.001).
In addition, Dr. Hammerman has led efforts to participate in key critical care society meetings. He also participated in a medical mission to Ukraine with the Society of Critical Care Medicine to educate critical care teams on best approaches to facilitating recovery of trauma patients.
Prior to joining Select Medical in 2013, Dr. Hammerman was director of pulmonary and critical care medicine for Geisinger Health System.
An assistant professor at Penn State University School of Medicine, Dr. Hammerman rounds in the medical intensive care unit at Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland. Dr. Hammerman earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and master’s degree in medical management from Carnegie Mellon University. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Boston University Medical Center.
A frequent lecturer and author, Dr. Hammerman is a member of the AHA’s Committee on Clinical Leadership, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, American Thoracic Society, and past governor (Commonwealth of Pennsylvania) of the American College of Chest Physicians.
